Allegory is a representation of abstract ideas of principals by characters, figures, or events in a story. Coppola in "Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier(Redux)" was a representation of the Vietnam War through the use of allegory. The film was not just a war story, but a symbolic movie to show the effects of the devastating war.
Coppola used symbolism through the characters in the movie to show the effects of the war. For example the play boy bunny girls when they were forced to model for the soldiers. This symbolizes the innocence that was forcibly being taken away from them through the war. These young soldiers then could never be the same after their innocents was stolen by the war.
Also the film represented how chaotic and filled with confusion. The mission of Captain Willard and his crew to find a fellow American Captain Kurtz. Through this journey they run into multiple chaotic scenes, where many innocent civilians where killed. These events and figures in the story are symbolic to showing the Vietnam was being fought for the wrong reasons due to the confusion of what the Unites State's real mission was in Vietnam.

All of these individual stories Captain Willard and his crew ran into while on their journey down the river to find Captain Kurtz added up to one symbol. This journey symbolized the road into one's heart to find where the heart of darkness is. Kurtz had reached his heart of darkness, where now he believes he no longer is subjected to moral judgments as normal people. For example when Willard finds Kurtz, he had turned into a cannibal that had decorated with heads on posts. This shows the devastating side effects on a soldier's mind from war.
