"Apocalypse Now" by Francis Ford Coppola, is a masterpiece which stands out from all the varying literature and cinema which has aimed to recreate the Vietnam War and its influence on the individuals that took part of it. The script, which is based on the novel " Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad, is very vivid and very unusual.
The story progresses around Captain Benjamin L. Willard, who is sent onto a journey to assasinate the insane Walter E. Kurtz. Throughout his journey we whitness the daily lives of the American soldiers, which is mostly made up of daily attacks and an ongoing struggle to stay alive.
We can see the effects of war on both Captain Benjamin L. Willard and Walter E. Kurtz, who are the main characters in the movie. Both are certainly affected by what they have seen, and for both war has become a fact of life which will not leave them alone, even if it is over. The quote "Everyone gets everything he wants.I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one. They brought it up to me like room service... It was a real choice mission- and when it was over , I never want another..." clearly shows the confusion and regrett that haunts Captain Benjamin L. Willard and portrays a situation which many soldiers are in. " Shit! Charging a man with murder in this place was like handling out speeding tickets at the Indy 500" brings to light the ethical struggle at war.
Other than analyzing war issues, and its effects on individuals, the movie is very symbolic and visual. Vivid sights, music and quotes are important tools which are used tobring the Vietnam War and individual struggles alive.

We could analyze the journey that the hero takes through Vietnam as his journey into his inner " Heart of Darkness". The journey he takes to reveal his own darkest self.

Other than analyzing war issues, and its effects on individuals, the movie is very symbolic and visual.Itis a journey taken in the Vietnam War and a introspective self journey of a character trying to make sense of his surroundings. Vivid sights, music and quotes are important tools which are used tobring the Vietnam War and individual struggles alive.
